Is NeuroCorrect Therapy Neurofeedback Safe?
Neurofeedback (NFB), also called neurotherapy or neurobiofeedback, is a type of biofeedback that uses real-time displays of brain activity - most commonly electroencephalography (EEG) - in an attempt to teach self-regulation of brain function. Typically, sensors are placed on the scalp to measure electrical activity, with measurements displayed using video displays or sound.
Neurofeedback is generally recognized as a safe intervention for improving electroneurological flexibility. A majority of reported side effects are not considered dangerous and usually transitory in that they'll eventually subside.

Neurofeedback is a kind of biofeedback, which teaches self-control of brain functions to subjects by measuring brain waves and providing a feedback signal. Neurofeedback usually provides the audio and or video feedback. Positive or negative feedback is produced for desirable or undesirable brain activities, respectively. In this review, we provided clinical and technical information about the following issues: (1) Various neurofeedback treatment protocols i.e. alpha, beta, alpha/theta, delta, gamma, and theta; (2) Different EEG electrode placements i.e. standard recording channels in the frontal, temporal, central, and occipital lobes; (3) Electrode montages (unipolar, bipolar); (4) Types of neurofeedback i.e. frequency, power, slow cortical potential, functional magnetic resonance imaging, and so on; (5) Clinical applications of neurofeedback i.e. treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, depression, epilepsy, insomnia, drug addiction, schizophrenia, learning disabilities, dyslexia and dyscalculia, autistic spectrum disorders and so on as well as other applications such as pain management, and the improvement of musical and athletic performance. Neurofeedback is known as a complementary and alternative treatment of many brain dysfunctions.

The brainwave data recorded with the QEEG is statistically compared to a sophisticated and large normative database and a report is generated. This assessment procedure allows the doctor to determine, in a scientifically objective manner whether a client’s brainwave patterns are different from normal. The QEEG assessment provides the Neurocorrect clinic (doctor) with the neurofeedback recommended treatment plan option that will be used for future clinic visits. These protocols are designed to retrain the brainwave patterns toward a normal state. As the brainwave patterns normalize, the brain is able to operate more optimally and efficiently.
NeuroCorrect Neurofeedback Therapy Sessions
Individuals are hooked up to a computer using wires and sensors and the computer records their brainwave activity. These sensors are noninvasive, as no electrical current is put into the brain. The sensors simply record the brainwaves coming from the brain. Information about these brainwaves is displayed on the doctor’s monitor. When one enters a neurofeedback session, the therapist directs them to sit down and attaches sensors to their scalp. The computer EEG program then starts processing brain signals and providing live interpretation. Some practitioners use qEEG (quantitative EEG) or brain mapping to track brain function and map out problem areas. However, this is not necessary for neurofeedback therapy, and its cost can be restrictive.
The main technique used in neurofeedback has the computer program playing music and videos. When the brainwaves are going in a desirable direction, the music and video continue playing. As soon as the brainwaves start going in the other direction, towards anxiety, for example, the music and video stop, and the individual has to try getting the brainwaves back to the desired state. The more often the individual does so, at higher and higher levels of difficulty, the better he or she becomes at it. The software automatically detects when the brainwaves are properly ordered and it feeds that information back to the patient. This feedback appears in the form of a game, movie, or sound which signals the patient that the brainwaves are becoming more ordered. For example, in the image above, the patient is watching a puzzle of a picture that is being filled in piece by piece. As long as the patient’s brain waves are moving in an orderly direction, the puzzle pieces are filled in and the patient hears a tone. If the brainwave patterns move away from an orderly pattern, then the puzzle does not get filled in and no tone is produced. The patient is actually controlling the completion of the puzzle with their brain and by doing so; the brain is learning how to regulate itself.
Some neurofeedback therapy, especially when used for children with attention disorders, functions like a video game, with children having to direct their brainwaves to make characters move in certain directions, or to achieve certain results on the screen. In another design, the patient performs the training while watching a movie. In this case the patient may watch a DVD movie that is being controlled by their ability to regulate their brainwaves. The movie will get brighter as the brain waves normalize and become darker when they become dysregulated. The brain’s natural desire to watch the movie clearly will drive those neurological circuits that normalize the brainwaves and allow the picture to be visualized. The more those circuits are driven and used – the more neuroplastic changes take hold. The patient learns how to use those new circuits during the demands of everyday life.
Neurofeedback as a science and therapy has been developing since the 1920s. There are many proponents of it as an effective treatment for a range of ailments, including mental illness, brain injuries, and attention disorders.
